We are in Niamey, there are night  images of  Africans getting on a bus ; this depicts the beginning of a long journey through Teneré, towards Libya, and then, perhaps, Europe. The film chronicles the first part of the journey, and unfortunately, as we, often have heard of the Africans unlucky endings on the beaches of Lampedusa… It is the meeting point for many of them who have escaped from their countries, either for desperation, for choice, but, also for adventure, and knowledge .The denunciations made by the repatriates, who have been forced by the Libyan government to return, are also strongly notified and are often proceeded by long periods in prison without any respect for human rights.

Lavoratori

TRAILER

Regia: Tommaso Cotronei
Produzione: Tommaso Cotronei
Italia - 2005
48 minuti

A portrait on the Calabrian countryside of today, “Lavoratori” (Workers)  tells with great intensity the hardships of farmers in one of the poorest regions of Italy through the everyday life of two families, from the milking of sheep, to the ploughing of land.
Tommaso Cotronei’s attention is riveted to children, whose existence  scheduled by a strict education, is sometimes cruel. The youngsters live following the “rhythm” of the land,  they spend time playing with the animals in the fields; and probably are the only ones who transpire emotion.
Gestures of endearment are rare in this “universe”, and generational ties are seen more through work, than family attachment, The few words spoken during the film are mingled together, with the sounds of nature, chirping of birds, and bleating of sheep. The fields, the silent rivers are in contrast with the rigid work of the men, whose life seems only made of hardships.

Tommaso Cotronei was born in Calabria in 1955 and has, always worked with his parents. In 1993, becomes assistant to Vittorio de Seta, after having been influenced and affected by the documentary “In Calabria”, and thus thereafter , discovering in the cinema a means of expression. In 1998, he shoots his first documentary “Nel blu cercando fiabe” (Looking for fairytales in the sky), presented at the Arcipelago Cinema of Rome.

L'isola analogica (The Analogical Island)

TRAILER

Regia: Francesco Raganato
Produzione: Todos contentos y yo tambien
Italia - 2007
27 minuti

The analogical island narrates of some curious happenings taken place on the island of Alicudi; “expressions of a magmatic intertwining of legends, hallucinations, superstitions and traditions, linked (or not) to the accidental use of rye in food products”.
Rye, in certain climatic conditions can be attacked by a minute fungus parasite, called Ergot, the same fungus, from which, Albert Hoffman obtained LSD.
The inhabitants of Alicudi, accordingly to different witnesses, at the beginning of the last century, and without knowing it, had  lived through an epidemic of Ergot, most probably for the continual use of rye in the making of bread.
The documentary witnesses the traces of the episode that still remain in the “story telling” of the island,…  from ,women flying in the sky over to Palermo to do shopping,.. of magic formulas to stop whirlwinds,… to the curse of “San Bartolo” connected to the transfer of the statue from the old, to the new church.
In these tales, it seems as if logic, that governs the ways of our “civilized life”, looses its power and ability to distinguish the difference between the real and unreal, the right and the wrong,  leaving  its place to an holistic life definitely, analogical.

Francesco Giuseppe Raganato  was  born in 1978. In 2002 he launches himself in an advantageous collaboration with GANGA, working on several projects of music and documentary films, as, “The Big Question”, awarded in a number of occasions.
He has shot various documentaries for RAI 3, La 7, Fox Crime, History Channel, Sat 2000. His documentary film “San Giuseppe da Copertino” ,was prized at the International Salento Film Festival, and at the Satricum Doc Festival 2006. In 2005, he won the Kodak Prize for best Cinematography at the Fandango Festival.

The documentary,   “a story of a journey into music”. becomes a metaphor to interlace realities, -those of the Southern World-  apparently different, but owing to the mixture of sounds, to styles of life,  the way they perceive temporal dimension,  succeed to draw  these realities together. Through the videocamera, one attempts to enter into the everyday privacy of the situations filmed,  trying to make another kind of consideration, that of , understanding  the world South of Puglia to Calabria.  All this is done with the rhythm of music,  consequently trying to find a way to tell a story with “breaks” on the daily life of the artists. .One sets off from Salento with Enza Pagliara, well-known percussionist, who we followed during her concert, and interviewed in different moments of her day.;  The Sud Sound System, always in Salento, who, since their debut, have had a great impact with the Italian musical world,  using and introducing the  Salento  dialect into Reggae music; and at the end, in Calabria, where the Phaleg, who collaborate with an Algerian group, play. Vincenzo Tusa, the supervisor of the “antiquities” of  Western Sicily from the 60’s to the middle 80’s; had a dream: protect and save the archaeological site of Selinunte-( ancient and powerful Greek city in Sicily in the VII century B.C –) from building speculation and the negligence of the territory. For more than 20 years, Tusa worked at creating a structure for an archaeological park: and after 1985 an area of 270 hectares was finally delimitated, today uncontaminated. The elderly supervisor made it possible to highlight the culture of Selinunte.  Vincenzo Consolo- a distinguished visitor- read verses from his “Retablo” among the ruins. Many years later Tusa returned to Selinunte and met the labourers  who worked with him at the digs, they were the old  “ tombaroli”, (archaeological site robbers), that he employed to prevent them from looting everything in the site. Tusa, also tells of the stories linked to the interests and the aims of the mafia on Selinunte executed by the “cugini” (cousins) Salvo”, the powerful illegal tax collectors, “the viceroy of Sicily”, explains Attilio Bolzoni,  protagonists of a long interweaving  relation between the mafia and politics, still enduring at present day.

Italia - 2006
57 minuti

Once again Calabria is in the limelight for its not flattering fame as the poorest region in Italy. Here one tries to understand what happened to this region during the economical boom, while others regions in Italy flourished and developed a radical change, and style of life. Through Enzo’s story, an ex clerk of the Nuovo Pignone di Vibo Valentia ( a steel and iron industry ), a journey will be taken,  leading us from, the  passing of the bill “Pacchetto Colombo”  (Colombo Project)”in 1960,  up to the failure of this attempt ,and through the events of the Pertusola di Crotone, the industry of  Saline Ioniche of Reggio Calabria, and of the V° Steel and Iron Centre of Gioia Tauro. Enormous investments have been spent in vain; building dream castles in the air;, that never, even began to function, leaving hundreds of workers stranded without work and not receiving redundancy payment. To counter balance this reality, there were those, who chose to return to the land drawing forth, and taking advantage of the  richness it could offer.

Silvana Costa, was born at Vibo Valentia on the 22th/April/1980.In 1999, after having finished high school, she moved to Rome to attend a course at the D.A.M.S , in the University of Roma 3, where she  discussed a thesis on documentary cinematography, dealing with the cinema of Vittorio De Seta. In 2004 she attended a professional training course in film direction, at the Down Town Pictures, receiving a diploma. Since the end of 2004 she has been working as a documentary film maker in collaboration with the Suttvuess Soc Coop of Rome. In 2006 she shot  two short films in occasion of the restorations of the Palazzo Barberini. “Il restauro” and of the preparation and inauguration of the Exhibition on Antique Art held in the same building…”Dietro la Cornice” (Behind the Frame)

Tre lamette cento lire

TRAILER

Regia: Giovanni Massa
Produzione: Nanook
Co-produzione: C.L.C.T. (Coop. Lavoratori Cinema e Teatro)
Italia - 2007

The Shipping Yard of Palermo was founded in 1901 by Ignazio Florio and has represented, for over a century, the real and only nucleus of the working class in the city. Other working class realities have also preceded…as the Fonderia Oretea  (Foundry Oretea), always connected to the Florio,.. but no other enterprise has lasted, in Palermo, for over a century, through continual crisis, closing down threats, and new owners. “Tre lamette cento lire” (3 razors one hundred lira) leads us through the story, giving the possibility to whom, in a way or another, lived the extraordinary “rise and fall” in first person, (old workers, union representatives, managers, historians, researchers) It is the first time that the Fincantieri gives the authorization to film during shipping construction works in Palermo, and its also the first time that one tries to reconstruct a story made even more strenuous to accomplish due to the intricate availability of documentary and iconographical sources. For this reason,  newspapers and magazines of the period are extremely precious (Il Povero,  Il Giornale di Sicilia,  L’Ora, etc.) and the inventory of the Istituto Luce (Light Institution) remain of great interest (in which a first documentation of the launching of a shipping yard in Palermo dates back to the beginning of the 30’s) Union fights, mafia infiltrations, homicides forgotten by history, great naval realizations, political battles, human sacrifices, class solidarity, and tradition:.. the Cantiere  Navale of Palermo has been this, and more.
“Tre lamette e cento lire”  aims to make people never forget. Hoping to be the beginning of the first “ mosaic” of a discovery.

Giovanni Massa was born in Palermo in 1954. In 1978 he became member of the Cooperativo dei  Lavoratori del Cinema e del Teatro (workers co-op for cinema and theatre), and begins to work in the field of documentary film making. At present he is in the phase of  pre-production for the filming of a new documentary “Mata  es  mi destino”. Since 1998 he has been directing the Festival Nanook Films.

TRAILER

Co-produzione: La Compagnie des Taxi-Brousse
Italia/Francia - 2006
52 minuti

The special relation that Venice has with the sea, has made this city into the greatest trading power centre in the world. A power, in which a secret lies; that  connected to its terrific fleet,   especially to the Venetian galley, a craft that has made the Serenissima the “prima donna” of the seas. In June, 2000, the galley was  hauled up to the surface: It was the first time that this mythical craft  had ever been discovered. For us, this discovery was an occasion to give way to our research: This film proposes a journey to make us understand how the Republic of Venice had been able  to improve a craft (model) used since ancient times. Consequently, all the medieval maritime world became prominent: the lust for luxury through the trade of silk and species, the construction technologies,, expansion of maritime knowledges, and navigational maps. A real human and technical adventure, this film gives life, once again to the epic of the galley, and, with it, the history of the power and decline of the Republic of the Serenissima.
