Through affirmations and family archives, this documentary film tells the history of the Pieds-Noirs, whose story, is above all, that of French Algeria: its about conquest of a colony founded on a foreign land, composed of Spanish Republicans, Italians escaping from the Italian Fascism, Maltese who fled from poverty, and of Parisian workers. The majority of descendents of these people ,are those, that will be forced to leave during the war of 1962.The important colonies instead escaped before. Once having returned to France, the Pied Noirs, considered fascists, and only interested in profit, did not receive a good greeting ,because of having refused to give independence back to the Algerians. The misunderstanding got worse, and the extreme right wing took over the situation. In the thousands of families, after 44 years, the elderly felt the need to tell about their “different” past: each personal story becomes an explanation for a collective one, rich of different “blood lines” and of the complexity of this cultural “melting pot “

Gilles Perez .is film director and author. Between 2003 and 2005 he filmed a documentary on the Nationalism in Corsica. In 2003 “En quete d’Ingrid”, a portrait on Ingrid Betancourt, broadcasted on Canal+, it received the SCAM prize (societe civile des auteurs multimedia). He also did : “Drogues, paroles de toxicomanes”; a series of 5 short films filmed for the European Commission; “L’Europe frappe au coeur”, four short films on the anti-terrorism in Europe; “Paroles de victims”, twenty short films on the victims in Europe; “Nes avec preservative”,a pedagogical film on AIDS prevention destined to the young and “Sida: Paroles de Jeunes” that tells about the life of five youngsters between the ages of 17 and 25, of which three have aids.

The film is based on the history of the 30’s in Spain up to nowadays. For many centuries different cultures have mixed and gotten into violent conflicts. Today Spain is the South-Western frontier of the European Union: separating Europe from Africa, and from the Muslim world. It is of a strategic position in international development. The Spanish Civil War has been described in different aspects: the international brigades, the involvement of the German Nazis, the support of Mussolini, the civil war as an introduction to the second world war, and the 72 countries that took part in the hostilities. But the role of the Muslim soldiers taking part in this European conflict has never been a subject in a documentary film before, and 70 years later the time has come for the survivors to speak, even if very few are left. Involuntarily they have determined to contribute to the destiny of Spain and Europe, in a war, in which they were part of the winners, but then forgotten by everyone.

Driss Deiback was born in Melilla. He attended the Film Conservatory in Paris. In 1998 his first story was published “Les memoires de Don Alberto”, he then goes to Los Angeles where he writes a number of film scripts and shoots two short films in 35 mm: “Sandy” and “Aberration”. In 1996 he films his first feature film “The refuge” in New York, a thriller that takes place between Melilla and New York, the film was chosen by Kodak to be screened at the Film Festival of Berlin in the section dedicated to the independent American cinema. In 2002 is author and producer of the documentary “Natural de Mellilla”,filmed in his home town: a portrait on races that intermingle, Christians, Jews, and Muslims of Melilla, which express themselves harshly on religion, politics, and homosexuality. In 2005 he films a documentary for the German Television network NDR on Melilla, describing it as the last “entrance door” into Europe for the Subsaharian immigrants.
