innovations of the international competition 2008

And also this year, the number of works submitted have increased and reached about 320,representing 29 countries, as has the variety and range of the area attentive to the themes of the Mediterranean: from North Africa to the Middle East and Europe, and from the Black Sea to Portugal.

This shows that the Festival is strengthening its prestige in the International Community of quality audiovisual professionals, and its significance in comparison with television broadcasters, producers, and with author/directors.


This year the most nurtured of the original proposals result in the category of “Art, Heritage, and Mediterranean cultures”, following comes “Mediterranean Challenges”, this category refers to the great themes of the Mediterranean; from the environment, to migrations, from the challenge of peace making, to a civil life in common. Never has the category of the “First Creation” been so rich of participants, therefore verifying how the Prize attracts and draws new talents.

first stage: selection


The execution of the selection of works in competition, is carried out at the headquarters of the CMCA, Mediterranean Centre for Audiovisual Communication, in Marseille, France
The International Selection Committee is composed by documentary, cinema, and television professionals coming from the North and South Mediterranean area, together with delegates of the CMCA, INA (Institut National de Audiovisuel), and RAI. The Selection Committee chooses a minimum of five films for each Prize category. The selected films compete at the final stage of the Prize in Italy.

Five Official Prizes and five Special Prizes, are to be assigned in Turin, among the 30 finalists works previously selected in Marseille.

The International Jury is composed by a maximum of 15 documentary, cinema, and television  professionals, appointed by mutual consent by both the RAI and CMCA.

THE 5 OFFICIAL PRIZES

  • Mediterranean Challenges”- Grand Prize CMCA (Worth 6000 Euro). Awards the film (documentary or reportage) that best illustrates the challenges of the Mediterranean area giving forth new and useful reading interpretation of the current situation. In this category the works that compete are able to foster depth and understanding to the flow of events, and are attentive to the protagonists

  • “Memories of the Mediterranean” (Worth 5000 Euro). Awards the documentary, that with or without archives, is able to bring past historical events into the present day context. The works in this category can tell of individual or collective stories of men and women, symbolic places, and memories.

  • “Art, Heritage, and Culture of the Mediterranean” (Worth 5000 Euro). Awards the documentary that best brings out the artistic expressions (music, fine arts, visual and performing arts), heritage (sites, monuments, works of art, architecture, and archaeological evidences) and other multiple traits of Mediterranean culture (traditions and folklore).

  • “First Creation” (Worth 5000 Euro). The prize recognizes the talent of a film director who has not accomplished more than three documentaries. The works produced in the framework of a university formation or of professional training are invited to participate

  • “The Golden Lighthouse”. Awards the best television magazine that deals with current themes (society, geopolitics, environment, economy, and culture) of the Mediterranean area. This category takes into consideration the quality of the journalistic inquiries, its content, its accomplishment and introduction. The television magazine can compete with or without taking part of a studio

THE 5 OFFICIAL PRIZES

The five prizes will be assigned to both film directors and authors of the awarded programmes.

In the 2008 edition, five special prizes may eventually be assigned  to the finalists works all together, of which three related to broadcasting, giving the International Prize for Mediterranean Documentary and Reportage an always more clear and precise role in highlighting and eventual broadcasting of the documentary d ’auteur:
 

Special Prize of the International Jury (5000 €) for the film among those selected all together, in the categories: “Mediterranean Challenges”, “Mediterranean Memories”, “Art, Heritage, and Cultures of the Mediterranean”, “First Creation”. The film that the Jury believes to be more distinctive, and that has not received one of the five official Prizes, will be rewarded by the Prize.. 

Special  broadcasting Prize on “RAI 3 for the Mediterranean”, for a film selected among all the categories together. The winning Prize will be broadcasted on RAI 3.

Special broadcasting Prize on “France 3 Mediterranée”, for a film selected among all the categories together. The winning Prize will be broadcasted on France 3 Méditerranée.

Special broadcasting Prize on “ENTV” for a film selected among all the categories together. The winning  Prize will be broadcasted on the Agerian ENTV

These last three Prizes will be assigned by representatives of the respective Television channels, and under unquestionable decision, and judgement. The broadcasting of the winning works will be specifically agreed, and decided on,  between the channel and the authors of the winning films.

Special ASBU Prize (Arab States Broadcasting Union)

NATIONAL COMPETITION

The Special Prize “Arco Latino” proffered by the Province of Turin (5000 Euro) to the Italian documentary or Reportage that best illustrates the continuity and discontinuity of the Mediterranean area in wide range:  between; tradition and modernity; openness and closure; slow transformations and rapid innovations; images never seen before, and images from archives:

13 will be the finalists works in Turin, chosen among 50 documentaries coming from Italy,which at present are being selected in Marseille.
